So here we are. The dreaded week 2. Where the shiny and new has worn off your Whole30 and reality is setting in. 30 days seems REALLY long. No sugary sweets. No adult beverages. No winging it for meals. Being planful and mindful is the name of the game.

I’m Doing the Whole30

It's Time for a Reset

Ok friends. It’s time. For the next 30 days, I will not be eating:

  • Added sugar – real or artificial. Yes, that includes honey, maple syrup and stevia.
  • Alcohol. So long, Vander Mill Totally Roasted.
  • Grains. Of any kind.
  • Legumes. Beans, peas, lentils, peanuts – and yes, peanut butter.
  • Dairy. No cow, goat, or sheep’s milk products – includes cheese, yogurt and yes, my beloved Whit’s.
  • Carrageenan, MSG, or sulfites.
  • Baked goods, junk foods, or treats with “approved” ingredients. So no pancakes, waffles, “nice” cream or tortillas with approved ingredients.

These are the rules of the Whole30. A dietary reset that’s designed to break sugar cravings and unhealthy habits. It’s not about weight loss. It’s about me paying attention to what I’m eating, why I’m eating it and how it makes me feel.

I repeat: This is NOT about losing weight.

1997

“1997, Missy. If we made it through 1997, we can make it through anything.”

1997 was the year we married.
But it was so much more than just a wedding.
In 1997….
We were dealing with the aftermath of my dad’s massive stroke.
We were building a house.
Jon was in the police academy.
I was just out of college and starting my new job at 10tv.
We were planning our wedding.
Life was a roller coaster.
And we survived.
By the end of the year, we were married, the house was built, Jon was working for Hilliard PD and my dad was slowly recovering.
Since then, it feels like everything and nothing has changed all at the same time.
Miscarriages.
Connor.
Miscarriages.
Harrison.
A job change for me.
A huge life change in getting healthy together.
We both discovered new passions, new ministries, renewed our faith in God.
Jon found his calling in working with high school kids.
I found a way to get out of tv and still tell awesome stories and help others 😃
We did it TOGETHER.
It’s been 20 years since that day we walked down the aisle together… hand in hand… ready to start a new chapter as a married couple.
It was a scary year and we’ve had fears and doubts come to life right in front of us since then… but never ever have I doubted you, Jon.
Thank you for being more than my husband.
Thank you for showing me love and grace and kindness and faith.
You make me stronger every day.
We are stronger every day.

Recipe: Tahini Garlic Dressing

My latest obsession. It gets drizzled on everything.

Introducing my latest obsession… Homemade Garlic Tahini Dressing.

For ages I have resisted making my own dressing. I had it worked up in my mind that it was a difficult undertaking (I have no idea why). So I spent my time researching and buying clean salad dressings (Tessemae’s and Primal Kitchen are my two faves).

Then, one day on a whim, I decided to buy some tahini. Then I started researching what I could make with it. Enter this dressing. OH MY GOSH. I drizzle it on just about anything I can think of – Scrambled eggs. Roasted veggies. Salads. It. Is. So. Good.

This is a mash up of a few different recipes I found while on my hunt. I love the lemony peppery flavor balanced with the nuttiness of the tahini. Plus, it’s super easy to whip up in my ninja blender cup.

Recipe: Tahini Garlic Dressing

Ingredients

  1. 1/2 cup tahini
  2. 3/4 cup water
  3. 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  4. 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  5. 2 cloves garlic, peeled
  6. ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Throw all of your ingredients in a blender or food processor and purée until smooth.
  2. Let the dressing sit for about 10 minutes before eating, to allow the flavors to mix together.
  3. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  4. If your dressing comes out thicker than you'd like, just add a little more water and blend again!!

When Your Smile is Hiding Your Fears

Be kind. Be gentle. Be patient.

That’s Jon and me at the Emmy awards in 2003.
Don’t we look fancy?
Don’t we look happy?
 
Well, we might have LOOKED fancy… but inside, we were freaking out.
 
When we arrived at the Emmy awards, where I was nominated for a regional Emmy, we were having fun… we were enjoying being dressed up…
 
We were also newly pregnant.
 
And while we were there, enjoying the excitement and fun of an awards party, I started bleeding…
The signal that I’d become all too familiar with.
The sign that this pregnancy wasn’t going to last, either.
Just like all the others.
 
I had to smile. And laugh. And carry on conversations.
All while my heart was breaking.
I wanted to cry.
I wanted to yell.
I wanted to break down.
 
But I couldn’t.
And neither could Jon.
So we leaned on each other and made it through the evening.
Driving home in quiet.
Praying all the way.
 
The next day was Mother’s Day.
Still spotting.
 
Convinced this was some cruel joke the universe was pulling on me.
Miscarrying on Mother’s Day.
That’s rich.
The next day we had an ultrasound.
And we saw it.
A heartbeat.
 
A tiny little fetus…. and a heartbeat.
The heart that’s beating now in that young man on the right.
I will never take that little heartbeat for granted.
 
There will be times when you don’t realize the person smiling at you is fighting a battle in their mind.
 
Be kind.
Be gentle.
Be patient.

True story: When I was little, I would get “lost” in Kmart to hear my name over the loudspeaker.

“Attention Kmart shoppers… we have a lost little girl named Missy….”

I used to love the spotlight.
I wanted to be “announced” 😉

Somewhere along the way, I lost that.
I faded into the background.

I became the friend who was quiet and listened and watched everything and everyone – and didn’t dare step into the spotlight.

I was afraid.
I didn’t want to fail.
I didn’t want to look silly.
